Idols?

February 6, 2023

I’m a person who develops idols easily. In fact, I think we all are.

No, I don’t mean I craft little images made out of wood or stone to bow down and worship. Idol worship today in America usually looks different than in Biblical times. An idol is simply something you want, desire, or love - or even worship - more than God.

It was a big realization for me several years ago when I recognized that even good things can become idols. A career can certainly be a good thing. It allows you to provide for a family, develop and refine new skills, and helps you contribute to society in a meaningful way. However, if God were to ask you, “If I took your career away from you, would I still be enough?”, what would you say?

I would suggest to you that if your answer is anything other than “yes”, your career in an idol. In fact, insert anything into that question. “If God took away X from your life, would He still be enough?”

Going through this exercise has become more commonplace in my life recently. I don’t want to have anything in my life not pass that test. Sometimes its a matter of getting rid of certain things from my life that have no value or benefit. Sometimes its a matter of keeping otherwise good things in their proper place.

This brings me to today’s main point. Hold The Line Training was founded out of a desire to build modern day warriors to stand in the breach against evil. It’s a way for me to honor Christ by sharing with others the work He’s done in my life, as well as the skills and experience He’s allowed me to gain.

When it comes down to it, it’s easy for me to start making it all about the training - the business management, the mindset training, the skill development, etc. However, if I desire to run a training organization more than I desire a close walk with God, this good work that I’m doing has become an idol.

Maybe there are things like this in your life. It might be your career, entertainment sources, material possessions, a ministry, or even your family. No matter what it is, take time and ask yourself, if God took this away from me, would He still be enough?

My answer? Yes, He is.

Even more than I want to provide you with great resources and training, I want this point to come across. There is one thing that is worth your time, energy, and devotion. More specifically one God. He is real. He died on the cross 2,000 years ago to redeem you from your sins against Him. He was resurrected and lives today. His name is Christ Jesus. And He wants to have a relationship with you.

I pray that as you read this, you would examine your life and consider what really matters. If you realize that there are idols in your life that you are pursuing more than God, now is the time to address them.

If you have questions or feedback, I’d love to discuss this further with you. You can reach me by email at isaac@htlwarrior.com.
